Maths provides a way of viewing and making sense of the world. It is used to analyse and communicate information and ideas and to tackle a range of practical tasks and real life problems. We aim for all our children to see maths as a vital part of everyday life and aim to nurture a confident, resourceful and enthusiastic attitude towards maths that will stay with them through their education and beyond. This is achieved through the formation of secure concepts based on:
- Appropriate practical activities.
- The process of enquiry and investigation.
- Mathematical skills and knowledge and quick recall of basic facts.
- The ability to express ideas concisely using accurate mathematical language.
- An ability to identify patterns and relationships and make connections across mathematical content as well as using it in new contexts.
- An awareness of the uses and applications of mathematics in everyday situations.
At Stock we strive to enable our children to solve problems confidently. Our philosophy is that every lesson is a problem solving lesson in which we highlight and value mathematical thinking in an environment where everyone’s idea counts in a creative and thoughtful climate.
Our maths lessons are based on the National Curriculum 2014 programmes of study. Reception children are taught using the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.
How we teach calculations to your child
We have a structured progressive approach to teaching calculations. In Key Stage 1, the children are introduced to informal methods of calculating using pictures and number lines to explain and record their work. As the children progress through the school, they are introduced to more formal methods of calculating. Please see the Stock Maths Calculation Policies for more information.
The ability to be fluent in the understanding of number facts including times tables is key to becoming a successful mathematician and enables children to approach increasingly complex problems with confidence. In Key Stage 1 and 2 the children participate in a Number Facts Award Scheme to encourage the children to learn their times tables and number facts. The challenge focuses on rewarding children as they become proficient in a number of times tables or number facts.
On-Line Independent Maths Learning
Each child has access to the Mymaths website which is an on line portal with maths games, times tables practice, on-line homework and also has in depth help for parents who wish to understand more about their child’s maths and the methods used in school.
In addition at Key Stage 2 they have access to the Sumdog website, which enables them to play games, whilst practising key skills. They have their own avatar and as they master skills they are rewarded with pets. It’s a great way to keep your child learning whilst having fun.
Maths Master-classes are run by Billericay School, which provide enrichment opportunities for particularly able or enthusiastic mathematicians. Two children from each class are chosen each term and invited to attend.
